Hi Ann….. don’t know if you would have the time to help me? But I’m intrested, have been for a while in making a wedge system in a large under the bed box. I live in the uk and have autism, I know I’ve commented before but thought I should say so you can understand me a bit better. I have my box and some bedding in it in coir and worms in it, and they making castings and all that but atm it’s just in the bottom all the way across, as I can’t work out how to get them to finish one area, as when I tried to do what you show in the beginning here, the finished end was still coir, after a few months, maybe I don’t have enough worms in there but I do have 2000ish babies that I’m feeding up to put in there. They are red wigglers, should I just put the babies in there and feed them up in the larger container?

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed 2 дня назад

I understand you just fine. 🤗 If it has been less than 6 months you need to wait for them to finish up. The way to get them to move is by only adding food to the side you want them to go to. After a few months of only feeding on one side they should have moved out of the old bedding. Then you can remove the finished castings. Mine are never 100% castings. It is more like vermicompost. I still see threads of coir or peat in the finished product. Ask any questions you want. I will always answer. 🪱👍🏼😃

I only started the journey of vericomposting a few months ago. Had to buy a bag of worm castings with cocoons in it cos every time i order worms, it takes too long for them to get to me. the cocoons in the castings a bought survived tho. got arounf 30-50 worms maybe more starting off. since the population was so small i put them in a small shoe bin until the population gets bigger. they ate up a good bit and i was able to get half a gallon sized ziploc bag of castings. was gonna make use of it right away before i paused and said, hold up, just in case eggs are in here let me leave the castings in the bag for a bit. Sure enough tiny worms are in there.......like a lot and i keep seeing them even tho i keep taking them out and putting them in the main bin to increase the population. clearly i need to sift and get as much as possible. I still don't have enough for my likeling but in another 3 to 6 months i think i'll have enough to have a decent size bin.

My experince, worms tend to escape when its rainy. I guess it is related to air pressure change in such weather. Worms have intinct to detect air pressure changes. we got worms from nature, soil with their behaviour in such weather. When they feel air pressure change they climb to surface to prevent drowning in rain water due to their instinct in nature

I have a similar tote from Costco. I've had it as my primary worm bin since 2019. The holes I've made was just for air flow up top, I haven't seen them looking worse than the day I bought it. I'm thinking that some of your damage may be from moisture and debri expanding in the small cracks from those holes making it break faster. Maybe running a lighter or something around the holes when you make them could seal and slow down that breakage, I'd be careful though since plastic can catch fire fast if your not careful

I've noticed a few gnats in my bin and i have thought about using mosquito bits to help, but I plan to use the worm castings for my vegetable garden and my concern is that the bacteria from the mosquito bits would have a harmful effect on my veggies, which we eventually plan to eat. What are your thoughts on this?

According to the package it is not harmful to humans. I might not use the castings on flowers that butterfly visit. I have heard that it can hurt them. I use a different type of BT for my cabbage to prevent the most larvae from eating them. Maybe there is a benefit to using the casting on brassicas? 😃🪱👍🏼

I once had a 3 foot diameter 3 foot tall wire mesh cylinder red wiggler outside bin filled with fresh waste greens from the local vegetable shop. When I added meat, bones, and fat - that type of thing - the worms just swarmed these items. I wondered if the worms loved this type of food merely because their otherwise green only diet was lacking in protein. Any thoughts ?

Interesting. I don't know. I think they just go to the food that is prepped and ready to eat by the local bacteria and microbes. 👍🏼🪱😃

Freezing freezing your veggies and or seeds puts the seeds in a dormant state I freeze my leftover seeds i plant in my own garden sometimes 2 or 3. Years before planting again

I have some screen I used in a diy sifter. It catches cocoons and most worms. Would that be an idea for the bottom bin? It would prevent ANY worms getting into the leachate bottom area, and it is flexible and easy to pull up and dump out for sifting finished compost. Also, get idea to use the risers! Thanks for this video!

I am not sure how small the screen would need to be to prevent baby worms. Do you know the size?🙂🪱👍🏼

How cold does it get in your winter?? I’m in MN and i’m keeping my worms indoors. I would like to start a large “blue” but don’t have the space indoors. what to do??

I'm zone 5 but we get a few -30 wind chill weeks. Nothing like your winters. My outside bin worms seem to make it but not in great numbers. I'm very lucky to have my cellar that is not good for anything except worm farming.🪱👍🏼🙂

Running an experiment here with frozen worm-rritos. Excessive amounts of food scraps wrapped in sheets of kids' schoolwork. Hoping they are loved as much as the stuffed tp tubes I've seen on other channels.

You have me really thinking about making those little risers for my Vermihut. I like the experiment, I would figure the frozen would go faster but who knows what the worms will do. I’m with you it’s easier to add some bedding to the bottom and clean it out every once in a while. 😁🪱🪱

Hey Anne! That's a decent handful of grown up worms you've got from the 'juice collection tray'. They sure will help in the working tray. ;) EDIT: Just checked my collection tray, just emptied 2 weeks ago and here they're all again... 😂 I'd go with all frozen any day, if the freezer compartment wasn't choke full bc of... ice cream boxes. But we're planning on getting a real freezer soon (or shall we say, I'm giving in to my wife 😅). Subscribed already boss! 🙌 Cheers, have a great week! 🪱🪱☀️ -Thomas

Your tower is really producing a lot of awesome castings. I find plastics in my natural bedding too, from raking up leaves, if the worms don't eat it it should not be in the garden. Freezing explodes the cell walls of the food, makes it more available to the microbes and the worms. This time of year, most of the food my worms get come out of the garden, the natural bedding has a ton of microbes that help break things down, 90% never makes it to the freezer. I had to start maintaining bedding below my CFT bin, started finding a few worms down there, now when I feed, I do what you do, take the bedding with the worms and put back on top. Nice video! Stay Well!!!

Thank you. The plastic drives me a bit nuts. I live near a park so I have more trash in my yard than most people. If the worms kick it out no bueno for me either. 🪱😃👍🏼

Is it just the lighting and or age of your vermipost that makes it look so light brown? Mine is always black as night once the castings start building up? Also what species of compost worms do you use, Red Wigglers? Ive been using Euro reds for about 3 years and never had a problem with how fast or slow they produce castings, i actually have just the opposite problem. Not only do i have a ridiculous amount of castings compared to what i sell, but i literally have to depopulate my smaller bins and move a hell of alot of worms to my big outdoor bed. I also collect eggs because i thought maybe i could sell some of the excess and use one bin as what i call the nursery. I guess i cant complain beacause having the problem of to much should be a blessing but i went from the newbie overprotective worm parent the first year to damn guys take it easy, your supposed to be the bigger slower family member. 🫣😬 P.S. sorry for my bla bla bla, i honestly didn't mean to turn my comment in to a bookment. 😆🤐😬

My vermicompost is representative of the bedding I use. If there is lots of cardboard it is lighter. More leaves then it is darker. My 55 Gallon bin is a mix of reds, blues and euros. I make an actual ton a year and don't have enough to sell due to the size of my garden and landscaping. Maybe someday 👍🏼😃🪱

I was given a worm tower and I borrowed your idea of using the pvc risers for the stackable trays. It sure helps to keep the trays from getting stuck. Also, I added fresh grass clippings with the shredded paper for my ENCs and they are loving it. We shall see if the castings and breeding will be successful. Thanks for your videos and valuable information. 😊
